FOX releases ’24: Legacy’ sneak peek, we remain confused

FOX dropped a new 24: Legacy sneak peek on Wednesday, but it still doesn’t tell us all that much about the impending reboot of the franchise. Take a look at the new video below and see what you think:

Essentially, the sneak peek is another trailer with some comments from producers Brian Grazer, Evan Katz, Manny Coto and Howard Gordon mixed in, all of them assuring us that this is still 24 even though (so far) no one connected to the original series appears in Legacy.

Stars Corey Hawkins and Jimmy Smits talk briefly about the series as well, which gets unintentionally weird when Miranda Otto’s character Rebecca Ingram (pictured above) is shown and is the most discussed but Otto herself actually isn’t interviewed.

It’s a fine enough hype piece but it doesn’t provide any insight to the show or the characters that wasn’t already made available in FOX’s press release or the official trailer we saw two months ago (in fact, some of the same footage from the trailer is used).

And the sneak peek doesn’t answer the question that’s still on everyone’s minds: is Legacy really going to feel like 24? Or is this going to wind up as just another show using the 24 name and real-time concept?

Based on the two clips currently available it’s hard to say. On one hand, these are four of the producers who gave us the original 24 that we obsessed over and loved so much; if anyone can pull it off again, it’s these guys.

But at the same time, there’s nothing in this sneak peek or even in the Legacy trailer that’s popped like those scenes of Kiefer Sutherland shooting Xander Berkeley with a tranquilizer gun and looking at everyone suspiciously.

If 24: Legacy really wants to win 24 fans over, with its next video clip it’s got to come out swinging. And not just in terms of the action; it has to show us that it’s got a compelling story.

Every show can string together scenes of explosions and harried close-ups to create drama. What made 24 great was that it created a hero we cared about and wanted to spend a whole day with, and right now we’re still trying to figure out what Legacy is going to be.
