All the recent Star Wars hype has finally simmered down, right? No. This morning, on ABC’s Good Morning America, the teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story finally debuted. And, it looks fantastic!
We are immediately introduced to yet another strong, female protagonist, this time, named Jyn Erso. We hear she has a criminal record and a dark past – a troubled childhood. Felicity Jones takes on the role of this rebel in what looks set to be a much grittier Star Wars film than The Force Awakens. As discussed in our “What we know so far” post last month, Rogue One will be the first film in Disney’s new Star Wars Anthology series. This film will take place in between episodes III and IV, and the story follows a group of rebels as they aim to smuggle plans and parts for the Death Star from the Empire.
Darth Vader is rumored to make a prominent appearance in this movie, though, we don’t see him in this trailer. However, we do get a feel for the much more violent and realistic tone these battle scenes will set for the film. Many fans are already comparing the action expected of this movie to that of the recent video game, Star Wars: Battlefront. Which, I would say, is a spot on observation.
The alarming music towards the end of this teaser conveys just how in-the-thick-of-it this movie will be! The time frame in which this film is set means that Rogue One will explore the true horror that unfolded as Darth Vader rose to power. I, personally, think this is an exciting concept. I can’t wait to see how far Disney is willing to go with this. How dark will it get? It certainly looks action-packed, and what more could a Star Wars fan ask for.
Other stars include Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, and Forrest Whitaker, in roles which will help to tell the tale of this infant Rebellion.
Rogue One will be hitting cinemas December 16, 2016. Let us know in the comments what you think Rogue One will bring to the Star Wars franchise, and if you’re as excited as we are to find out!
