Aaaand the best news since the Gilmore Girls revival was announced just broke (courtesy of Variety): the critically acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman is coming to us in the shape of an eight-part TV series!
That’s right, you can forget about the disastrous movie which didn’t do justice to the first book despite a pretty stellar cast and (unsurprisingly, considering box-office numbers) never got a sequel, let alone two. Brought by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema, the series will air on BBC One. Hopefully, TV will be much more suited to the incredibly rich universe Philip Pullman has created and will allow for the intricate stories to be developped to their fullest.

Unlike me—I’m pretty sure I’m just about to lift off from the ground from all the excitement:

The author himself seems quite delighted about this new venture:
“In recent years we’ve seen how long stories on television, whether adaptations (‘Game of Thrones’) or original (‘The Sopranos,’ ‘The Wire’), can reach depths of characterization and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel. And the sheer talent now working in the world of long-form television is formidable.”
And since the series will cover all three books, this time around we’ll get to see Will and Mary Malone, the witches, Cittàgaze, the mulefas, the land of the dead … YOU GUYS!!! *jumps up and down*

In case you weren’t excited enough, there are also pretty legitimate rumblings about a new companion book featuring Lyra as the main character again … and maybe a prequel? According to the author, 2016 will bring us The Book of Dust which will take place two years after the events in The Amber Spyglass.

Stay tuned for casting announcements and more details both about the TV series and the new book! In the meantime, I’ll be coveting this omnibus edition of the books, which I need to get my grabby little hands on, now.
