Once upon a time, Teen Wolf introduced a new character in the coolest way ever (think “What? But she’s been dead 8 years…!” meets “Werecoyotes are a thing, deal with it”) and seeing her evolve into one of the best parts of the show has been a delight.
I am, of course, talking about Malia Tate. Yes, Tate. Because if finding out the mother who died in a car accident you thought you caused and the father who set coyote traps to unknowingly kill you, weren’t your real parents wasn’t bad enough … finding out that your biological parents are a certified psychopath and a vengeful murderer pretty much takes the cake.
Despite the heaviness of her lineage, and the 8-year stint in the woods, Malia has gone from acting on instinct to truly caring about others and valuing their lives often more than her own.
What’s more, Malia can kick some serious ass and still maintain a perfectly wind-blown haircut that I can only hope to replicate one day, if I ever happen to encounter the Dread Doctors. (Let’s hope not—my survival odds in Beacon Hills are pretty much nil.)
If you were wondering how Malia came into those skills, you’re about to wonder some more because she’s also an excellent dancer. Which comes in handy when so many wild parties take place in Beacon Hills. Who knows, maybe she was a budding ballerina before she relocated to a cave.
Coyotes do tip-toe, you know…. And they’re also possibly excellent at lacrosse, because cougars.
Who else wants a Malia/Coach spin off where they fight crime and drink a lot of coffee?!
Anyway, when she isn’t battling the forces of evil in her combat boots, Malia can be found being adorably bewildered by life as a human, much to the entertainment of the people in her life.
Which brings me to how cute she and Stiles are together. Who knew haunted mental institution basements were the new meet-cute?!
Aside from caring about Stiles more than most anyone else in her life, he’s also the only person Malia will let herself be completely vulnerable with.
Basically, they have each other’s back, always.
And that includes dead bodies, because Dude, it’s Beacon Hills.
All in all, Malia is the best and you either immediately embraced her character when she appeared in 3B (yes, in coyote form), or you’re reluctantly coming to love her, because how can you not?
Malia’s character arc is about to expand in a big, big, BIG way in 5B since her birth mother will be coming into town, and Malia has no intention of letting her do her thing (Which is killing people. That is Mrs. Malia’s Mom’s thing.) This, however, could land Malia in all kinds of trouble, and since Shelley Hennig had the wonderful idea of combining Malia and Orange Is The New Black back at the Paleyfest panel … If it comes to Malia ending up behind bars, I also want that spin off, please and thank you.
The rogue chicken wouldn’t stand a chance with Malia in the vicinity.
Teen Wolf (and Malia) return to MTV in January of 2016.
