Why ‘Red Rising’ is the new science-fiction trilogy you should be reading

If you’re even a little into up and coming fantasy novels, you’ve probably heard of Pierce Brown and his Red Rising series. You may, however, have been thrown off by the blurb, or the length, or the fact that the third book isn’t out yet.

BUT, I’m here to tell you why you should get all caught up! First of all, there are only a handful of book series that can generate enough excitement to warrant re-reads, anxiety over whether you’ll get the book on the day of and not a second later, and organizing your life around reading it as intensively as possible—“No I don’t need to eat or sleep or bathe, I HAVE PRIORITIES”. I’m talking Harry Potter, The Hunger Games levels of addictive, all right? You’ve been warned, you won’t get through this unscathed.

From the Goodreads blurb:

The Earth is dying. Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it. The Reds are humanity’s last hope.

Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it’s all a lie. That Mars has been habitable – and inhabited – for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labor, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought.

Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. But the command school is a battlefield – and Darrow isn’t the only student with an agenda.

You’ll meet a bunch of secondary—but very likable—characters you won’t be able to forget: Sevro (he seems crazy but you’re going to love him, check out this fantastic interpretation of him below), fiery Mustang, wily Fitchner, and many others. You’ll get swept up in the sheer scope of the story, the high stakes, and the ever-increasing intensity.

“I’m Gold, bitch. What’d you expect? Warm milk and cookies just because I’m pocket sized?”

Most of all, you’ll root for Darrow and his story.

You do not follow me because I am the strongest. Pax is. You do not follow me because I am the brightest. Mustang is. You follow me because you do not know where you are going. I do.”

Considering the overwhelming success and following the Red Rising series has garnered since the first book was released in January 2014, it’ll come as no surprise that a movie (plural?) is in the works. Shortly after the release, Deadline reported that Universal had won the bidding war for the screen rights, with World War Z director in talks to helm the movie. Of course, we’re now almost two years later and no other news has filtered, but considering the author is hard at work on the third book and he wrote the movie’s script too, it isn’t that surprising.

In the meantime, binge-read the first two books (Golden Son is just as good as Red Rising!) and count the days until Morning Star’s release with me!

Morning Star will be released on February 9, 2016.

With a double major in engineering and fangirling, Cecile frequently feels like she lives in the wrong time zone and has become increasingly familiar with sleep deprivation. The fact that she hates coffee doesn’t help, either. Her super powers include convincing friends to watch and become obsessed with 'Teen Wolf', one adorable Stiles GIF-set at a time.
