Teen Wolf: So what’s a Wendigo?

We’ve been introduced to yet another mythological creature in Beacon Hills: Wendigos (also spelled, Windigo). It’s unclear whether or not we’ll be seeing more of these creatures in season 4 of Teen Wolf, as [semi-spoiler alert] Wendigo-Sean has already been killed off.

Wendigos are one of the more popular supernatural creatures that Jeff Davis has toyed with so far in the show. They are legends in the Algonquin Native-American tribe of North America. Wendigos are described as demonic half-beasts. It is believed that the demonic spirits possess a human and cause an intense hunger for human flesh. Accounts of what a Wendigo looks like are varied but are typically described as gaunt and emaciated.

“The “monster” version of the mythical creature is human-like, but very tall and gaunt, with deeply sunken eyes and yellowish, decaying skin. They are impossibly thin and have an unending hunger that craves only human flesh.” – Gods and Monsters

“The Wendigo was gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tautly over its bones. With its bones pushing out against its skin, its complexion the ash gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into their sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. What lips it had were tattered and bloody [….] Unclean and suffering from suppurations of the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition, of death and corruption.” – Basil Johnston, Ojibwe teacher/scholar

Wendigos are specifically tied to the North, cold weather, woods and winter. It is said that instead of becoming possessed by a spirit, a person could turn into a Wendigo if they resorted to cannibalism. Even in famine, the Algonquian culture believed it was better to commit suicide or let oneself die instead. It is believed the only way to kill a Wendigo is to burn it or pierce its heart so that the spirit does not transfer to another human.

Could we be seeing more Wendigos in Beacon Hills? Even if we don’t, it shows that Jeff Davis will be opening the door wider to the realm of the supernatural this season. We know that a supernatural creature hit list is in play in season 4, so bring on the supes!

P.S. I’m still waiting for my unicorns.
